The Cricut E2 (Expression 2)

The Cricut E2, also known as the Expression 2, was released to celebrate the five year anniversary of the Provo Craft company's electronic die cut machine line.  In some ways it is very similar to the original Expression, but it does have some "upgrades" which are useful.

The first notable difference is that this machine does not require the use of the overlays for inputting cuts. Instead, it has a full color LCD touch screen and stylus to select and configure the die cut designs.

Although the Cricut E2 will not print (you will need to take a look at the Imagine machine for that capability), you can use both the original cartridges, as well as the Imagine cartridges in this model.  The original Expression is not configured to accept the Imagine cartridges.

An optional accessory with the Cricut E2 is a wireless adapter. By using the wireless adapter, you can use the machine with your computer without the need to connect with a USB cable. This is an especially feature if you have use the Design Studio software or the free online Cricut Craft Room to make your designs.

Other features include the following:

  • a cutting area light that shows exactly where you are cutting on the mat
  • a materials setting so you don't have to "guess" the pressure and speed needed to cut out certain materials (such as chipboard and vinyl)
  • a mat preview - this is especially useful for planning out how to lay your paper on the mat when making multiple different cuts from different colored card stock and paper
  • settings menu
  • customizable side trim pieces

The Cricut E2 also comes preloaded with two exclusive cartridges - the Cricut Alphabet cartridge and the Cricut Essentials cartridge.  Here are pictures of both:

I have also found a very informative video from Northridge Publishing in which you can see this die cut machine in action.

Not quite sure yet if this is the machine you need?  Here are a few more things you may want to check out: wanted to see how the Cricut E2 stacked up against the eClips from Sizzix.  They tested both machines on a variety of materials, and although E2 and eClips were comparable on paper, card stock, and fabric, the E2 did a better job in their test when used with acetate and intricate designs using chipboard.  You can read Craft Critique's Cricut E2 vs. Sizzix eClips post here.

Do you have the original Expression and are wondering if you should upgrade to the Cricut E2? Jenny at does in an depth review. According to the article, she has owned her Expression for three years. She makes some very good points about the differences between the two machines. Click here to read Craft Test Dummies' review of the Cricut Expression 2.
