Coming in November – the Cricut Mini Machine!

The Cricut Mini machine was introduced at the Craft & Hobby Association (CHA) Show in July and in just a few short weeks it will be available to buy!   Before I go into too much detail about this new member of the Provo Craft family, let me first show you a picture of it...

Cricut Mini MachineI also have  a video that I want to share with you.  This video was taken by Craft Critique at the CHA show in July.  In addition to the video, Craft Critique also posted an overview of the new Cricut machine on their blog.

I still have a few questions about this new model, but here is what I know so far...

Features of the Cricut Mini Die Cut Machine:

  • The cutting mat area is 8½" x 12", and the machine can make die cuts as small as ¼" to as large as 11½".
  • Like the other die cut machines from Cricut, this new model can cut a variety of materials, including thick and thin paper and card stock, fabric, vinyl, magnetic material, and metal foil.  At this point, I am not sure if it can cut through chipboard.
  • The Mini is cartridge-based, but you have to load your cartridges into the free online Cricut Craft Room and use the software to make cuts with this machine.  I have also read that you can use the Gypsy handheld with it, but I haven't been able to confirm if this is true or not.

AS A SIDE NOTE: I have did a little bit of design work with the Craft Room, but I have not tried to cut anything with it yet.  The online design tool is still in beta (although I think anyone can sign up and use it now).  As it still is in beta, there are a few minor bugs that still need to be worked out.  I have noticed a few when trying to design with it, although to stay on topic here, I won't get too much into those.  However, my main point is that if you are considering buying this machine, I would advise you to go ahead and sign up for the Craft Room to try out its design features.

  • The new Cricut Mini is compatible with both PCs and Mac computers.
  • The machine itself if small, lightweight, and quiet.  Personally, I like to craft at night after the kiddos have gone to bed, so if it's truly quiet, it might just be worth considering for that alone.  My Expression is so noisy (it might just be that it's old too and needs some kind of tune up, but I have no idea how to do that!).
  • According to the video, the suggested retail price for this machine is $119.00, which is affordable!  However, I noticed that Custom Crops has the Cricut Mini machine available for pre-order for $149.99.  Does this mean that Provo Craft has decided to raise the MSRP by thirty dollars?  I really hope not, but I guess we will find out soon!
  • Finally, what cartridges does it come with?  It comes with one pre-loaded cartridge - Font & Basic Shapes.  Since the cartridge is in digital format, you won't have an actual physical copy of it.

Finally, here is a link to the press release announcing the new Cricut Mini back in July.

Well, that's all I know about the new Cricut Mini machine to date.  I'm keeping an eye on the HSN calendar, but so far I am not sure of the actual launch date. When I find that out (and if I come across any other interesting or useful information) I will share it here.  UPDATE: The HSN launch date is November 15, 2011. Of course, if you have anything to add, please feel free to leave a comment.  Questions are welcome too - not sure if I will be able to answer them, but I will try!

  1. Well, today is the HSN launch date for the Cricut Mini! HSN’s bundle is $129.95 and includes an exclusive ornaments download code card and a $25 gift card for Cricut craft room content. It is my understanding that out of the box, the Mini machine will not work with the Gypsy, although there should be an update in the near future that will change this. Also, right now cartridges that are linked to a Gypsy can’t be uploaded to the Cricut Craft Room site – again, Gypsy owners are waiting for an update for this too. All my carts are linked to my Gypsy, and until they get these kinks worked out, I’m passing on this (although I would love to the have the ornaments download – so pretty!)
